The Dallas Stars are in a group of six teams fighting for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference and a recent surge has propelled them near the front of the pack. Can they earn another win tonight over the Edmonton Oilers?

The Stars have picked up points in seven of their last eight games (5-1-2) and should have a chance to extend that stretch as they visit the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

Sports bettors and touts have had a tough time figuring out the Oilers recently as they at times look improved, such as in their three recent wins over Winnipeg, Philadelphia and Calgary, but they’ve also showed their true colors in recent home losses to Phoenix and St. Louis.

The Stars play well in this series and it might be tough for Edmonton to pull out a win.

Friday, March 2nd

NHL odds boards list the Oilers anywhere between -110 and -115 depending on the hockey betting shop you use. The oddsmakers have also set the total at 5.5, but we will stick to the puck line when placing our NHL picks tonight.

NHL Odds: Oilers -110

The Dallas Stars can win because…

They’re playing particularly well right now.

Dallas Stars

The Stars are coming off a loss but a 4-3 shootout shortcoming at the hands of the red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins is nothing to be ashamed about. The Stars have still won five of their last eight games and they play particularly well against Edmonton.

So far this season, they’ve won both meetings but a count of 4-1 each time. They’ve won seven of the last 10 meetings overall and 28 of their last 41 visits to Edmonton.

The Oilers are a weak home team even though their 16-12-4 might imply otherwise. Edmonton has lost five of their last six at Rexall Place and any type of home-ice advantage is minimal.

Edmonton continues to feed Devan Dubnyk starts as he’s now suited up seven straight games. They might be wise to rest him against Dallas as he’s given up 10 goals in two career starts against the Stars – both losses. Meanwhile, Kari Lehtonen has won five of his seven career starts versus the Oilers while posting a 2.44 GAA and a .918 save percentage.

The Edmonton Oilers can win because…

They’ve played well recently.

Overall, they have three wins in their last five games and while that’s not a great winning percentage, at a closer look they deserve some credit. Their two losses have come to the Phoenix Coyotes and St. Louis Blues, who are two of the hottest teams in the NHL right now. Meanwhile, their three wins came against playoff contenders Calgary, Philadelphia and Winnipeg.

Edmonton Oilers

For the young Oilers, offense seems to be the key. They gave up 45 goals in 13 February contests (3.46 per game) and their goaltending has been consistently weak all season long. What seems to determine whether the Oilers can win is if their offense can outscore the opponent.

The Oilers have scored 16 goals in their last five games, which is why they’ve been fairly competitive. They’ll need to do the same on Friday to keep up with the Stars.

Outlook & NHL Betting Prediction:

Dallas isn’t a great road team but Friday figures to be a decent spot to take a shot with them. They’ve been playing well recently and have far more on the line than the Oilers.

Edmonton seems to thrive when they can take advantage of frail goaltenders but Dallas’ Kari Lehton has been pretty sharp of late as he’s posted a 2.10 GAA and .925 save percentage since the All-Star break.

Since it’s such a cheap price to back with your sports picks, take the Stars as they should come away with the win.
